From: Megan Pacelli To: Carl Weaver, Teresa Auerbach Subject: Interviews
Well so far the homeless guy I tracked down is a dead end, claims he didn't start the fire in the scrapyard and he was just only there following the 'it', his exact words, that actually set the fire. The detectives on the case are calling in a psychiatrist to see if 'Simple Dan' actually is competent to stand trail, working theory is that he might have some sort of split personality or something which could explain the 'it' he was talking about, not so sure myself it's the most logical explanation but given the world we live in when are things ever simple, also he referenced not being alone that night so could be he was with the other missing men, ultimately I'll move this over to a back burner for now till the detectives send me over there case files and results of the psych eval.
In the mean time I'll focus on Mr. Screwtape, not sure I'm going to get anything out of him however the guy gives me the chills, seriously there's something wrong with him he barely seems to even register my existence most of the time and when he dose it's simply to demand that we turn of the prototype to SenTaxx, I'll keep at it and let you know if anything changes.

Hey guys.
We're starting up a round of surveillance on all the Solveig-era legacy hires. Specifically looking for anything related to the ESI Labs break-in, but any "suspicious" activity can and should be forwarded. We're the eye in the sky, here, it's our job to stare.
Specific assignments are as follows:- Dani: Mary Gutierrez
- Ken: Jenna Mercado
- Juliet: Mila Cameron
- Carl: Dieter Herman
- Megan: [redacted] -- please refer to this as Subject 1 in all correspondence.
You know where to find all the relevant paperwork, of course. If there's anything specific you'd like us to pull up, just let me know and I'll get the PIT on it. Otherwise, just get back to us on your planned methodology and we'll sit back and wait for the magic to happen.
I can't stress enough how important it is that we keep this under wraps. All responses should come directly through me to Tess. A witch hunt in our own ranks is bad enough, we don't want word to spread beyond this. Even to the CEO, in some cases. Tess'll take care of the need-to-know bits. Thanks.
- Lucy
P.S.: Okay, wasn't my idea, but the boys started a betting pool on who solves what first. I'll see if I can't get some odds posted.

To: Lucy Subject: Re: New assignment
I have no idea how you expect me to surveil someone with clearence so much higher than my own. I'm an archaeologist, not a private eye. But I thought I should share a couple things that leap out at me, just to prove I've diverted from my research and given this the attention I feel it deserves. Or that I'd like you to think I think it deserves so I can keep getting paid.
1) I can rule out two of the five people on this list as being responsible for this thingamajiger being stolen. Neither Brad King nor Mary Gutierez exhibits the ability to use Anima, which was clearly used to override the locks. 2) I can rule out my own target with approximately 82% certainty. Miss Mercado has a streak of sadism a mile wide, but I don't think it extends to putting herself at risk of losing her job, from what I can glean from her file. Also, she's about six inches shorter than the person in the video, though she may have used anima to distort her physical form; I do not know her abilities well enough to rule that out. 3) I am seeing that Ms. Cameron had her 1-AXO clearance revoked on Monday, March 11th. The same day that the security rollback allowed the breach to happen. So, two questions.... WHEN on that day was her access revoked? And how tall is she?
Also, am I to be circumspect with Ms. Mercado in my line of questioning? If so, I will attempt to set up a meeting with Ms. Mercado under the guise of asking about spousal benefits after dissolution of marraige. I would rather not attempt subterfuge, however; I am a terrible liar and she has a reputation as a bit of a....person who will kill you type.

Don't sell yourself short, big guy. You brought up some things no one else did.
1) I assume by Brad you mean Herman -- and you'd be right, neither one has shown any anima capacity before. 2) The height's an interesting point: Jenna: 5'0", skinny. Mila: 5'0", skinnier. Herman: 6'1"...also skinny. Mary: 5'6", uhm. A smidge over recommended BMI, let's say. Subject 1: 5'3", and...skinny. Starting to get self-conscious, here. 3) Close to midnight.
Checked with Bosslady, says definitely do be circumspect. Just be sure to check your mail early. I wouldn't it past Jenna to mail out a form letter with "In case of divorce" on the envelope.
Good hunting!

INTERROGATION AGAIN (Megan)Lying. Lying for the greater good. Screwtape wanted to know if the ODIN prototype was being delivered. In fact, he all but insisted on this before any further communication could take place, never mind that he was bandaged up thicker than most mummies and under the constant supervision of two rather heavily armed guards. Has expression never changed. He could have just as well been discussing the weather on the way to a game. Except that would imply he enjoyed something, and both his guards can vouch that he hasn't smiled any more than he's frowned. Which is to say, not at all. Still, he had no phone. No radio. No internet access. Pigeons were being shooed away from his window, just in case he knew how to train them to deliver messages. He was, in short, totally shut off. So when instructions came from on high for Megan to just lie and say that Ægir had delivered the prototype, there was no way he could know otherwise. Time to start questioning. Tess had a list, where had it gone...? What is the ODIN device for?
He's cryptic on this, and if he had a suspicious face he'd be wearing it now. His first answer isn't helpful, that the world will know as soon as it's activated. Countered easily by pointing out that Ægir's delivering it personally and it's quite easy to radio the driver and ask them to pull over -- and quite tempting, when the cargo's made to sound like a WMD.
Screwtape evaluated. Then, amazingly, capitulated.
SenTaxx is evolving, he explains, past the need for workers and factories. The ODIN processor directly connects the research, production, and administrative facilities of their five main sites. It would control the machinery, evaluate the market needs, and conduct its own quality control. In short, it would eliminate the need for all but a very select, chosen few employees.
"Chosen few." His words. |
Why were the Sponsors there?
He claims not to know. He agrees with the idea that they hadn't come expecting to leave bodies behind, or else they would have env come in uniform. It was likely a show of force or solidarity. The Sponsors are not charitable when their assets start to flounder.
Surely Ægir understands that. |
What's with the goo found in the pipes?
A byproduct of manufacturing, mildly toxic. Dumping it back into the state water supply as-is is quite out of the question, of course, so it's run through countless miles of pipes and filters until sufficiently purified. Anima-retention architecture helps with this, and the constant running is sufficient to supply their anima generators with power to keep their wards up.
So long as the connecting pipes aren't closed off, of course. But surely people who work in the Solvall understands this already? |
What's with the drones under the New Hope plant?
An unfortunate byproduct of when the pipes were shut off. The anima wards failed, and some of the more...arcanoactive elements of the waste fluid seeped through the ether and polluted the workers' minds. It's likely the same happened to the Sponsor task force that was sent to the facility. Quite unfortunate, all terribly unexpected. |
Why are the other facilities closing?
The news report was quite accurate. A cost saving measure. SenTaxx invested quite heavily in the ODIN and the necessary infrastructure needed to capitalize on it. Fortunately, once the prototype is delivered the outlying facilities would be superfluous anyway.
In short, it was unavoidable. It's simply that the plants closed earlier than expected. |
What do you know about the break-in?
SenTaxx certainly isn't in the business of sabotaging itself. If they'd stolen the prototype, they wouldn't be having this talk right now. |
Has SenTaxx had any contact with Ægir /ex-Ægir employees in the past?
That's just silly. What would a pharmaceutical company with a guaranteed market share need with a networking firm?
He relented in the face of stony glare and a raised phone. No, SenTaxx has not hired, recruited, talent-scouted or otherwise used Ægir's cast-offs in any way. If any of the four thousand layoffs had been useful and Florida natives, perhaps. But none of them had a skillet of sufficient value to make the effort worth it.
Then again, if they had, they'd probably have never been laid off. Irony. |
That was everything Carl and Tess had wanted to ask about. Of course, it's not like Screwtape's going anywhere if anyone thinks of anything else. Though one wonders if he might eventually figure out that he's been lied to.

To: Jenna Mercado, Director HR, Ægir communications Subject: Confidential Meeting
We have never met, but by your reputation you have no use for pointless pleasantries, so I will spare the flowery salutations. My name is Ken Loper. I work in the Investigations department, though my expertise is in archaeological and historical research. I write today to request a private meeting at your earliest convenience. If you check my forms, you will see that I have filled out the requisite Untimely Death forms in triplicate, so that my spouse may receive death benefits if I were to lose my life. However, due to the secretive nature of my work, said spouse has decided a trial separation is in order. In the case that this separation graduates to dissolution, I am preemptively requesting that we meet in order to start the paperwork to sever her from aforementioned benefits. This may seem draconian or vindictive, but my ire at her decision is great, and I will not allow her to cash in on something she so virulently disapproves of when my job has led to such personal gratification. Plain English: If she can't be happy for me, then to Hell with her.
I would appreciate your utmost discretion in this matter. While I cannot say that I have made any friends at this company (I believe the sentiment is that I am...as dusty as the books I read, I believe it was?), I also trust that their desire to hold a celebration at any and every opportunity might lead to a foolish and undesired attempt to "hook me up" with someone.
I look forward to our meeting, Ms. Mercado. Despite the rumors to the contrary, I have no doubt that we will get along famously, due to our mutual belief that getting along is unnecessary. Also, because I have filled out the Untimely Death forms in triplicate, and I know how you hate paying out benefits to spouses.

Will inform you of the time of this meeting once it is set up. Will attempt to lull her with talk of my discontent for the current management's social preoccupations. Hopefully this will get her to talk with me about "the good ole days." By her reputation I very much doubt she'll wax eloquent, but maybe a useful tidbit will emerge. Hopefully my backstory contains enough truth to it that I will be able to pull this off. Fun Fact: When you deal with dead people for a living, you don't generally have to worry about whether they're seeing through your bullshit.

It helps to have friends on the force. An extremely tired Detective Lamarr calls at five in the morning to let Megan know that the fire department and the police have been all over the burn site and come to the following conclusions. 1. It was definitely arson. It's not so much the evidence as the lack of evidence, here: there were no accelerant paths, no empty gas cans, no oil-soaked rags...but the fire was way too controlled. It only burned down the one building. 2. Despite the building be listed as an abandoned garage, someone was clearly squatting there. I had been siphoning electricity from across the street. Their had been cleaned recently. Twisted metal skeletons showed where the furniture used to be: bed frame, desk, shelves. Even a pair of doggie dishes. 3. Simple Dan still denies having anything to do with it, and is being released into social services. At the risk of being un-PC, Lamarr doubts Dan has the ability to pull off such a controlled burn. 4. The current theory is that the place was a black market hub. For drugs, say. There was nothing in there for the creation of narcotics, but the way it was so thoroughly wrecked implies that someone had something to hide.

The sample makes the rounds in Columbia University's Occult Research and Methodology basement labs. Heavily warded and handled only by researchers in full protective gear, all of whom will be requesting a gratuitous payoff for being treated like CSI extras. Scientists. Honestly. As if they've anything better to do. The final conclusion is less than compelling, but there are several interesting finds that they're willing to share with you. 1. The stuff is MOSTLY water. Without getting into complicated chemical labels, the stuff is about 77% water, 11% lipid, 8% protein, 2% soluble organics, 1% carbohydrate, and 1% salt. 2. They have no idea what the heck this stuff is supposed to do, if anything. 3. Something funny happened when, on a lark, someone subjected the sample to an anima field. Everyone in the lab got a nose bleed. At the same time. They stopped messing around with it after that -- that was two days ago, and some of the researchers STILL have headaches.

From Lucy: "Go Ken go! From: Megan Pacelli To: Security Department Subject: Important possible security issue
The group of 6 homeless people that I've been tracking down as part of the investigation into the theft of the ODIN prototype are back and lurking around the park outside the Solvall, external security has been moving them off but it doesn't seem that they have made the connection yet, presumably to a low payed rent-a-cop one transient is more or the same as another, but I've visual confirmed it, it's the exact same group as before and given that they were seen just prior to the last break in and I understand we are well on our way to completing a second one, well I assume you can understand my concern.
I'd suggest instead of moving them on again they should be placed under close surveillance, even if they are not linked directly to the thief there's clearly something strange is happening here.
