Online Employment Application:
Thank you for your interest in joining the team at AEgir Incorporated, a group of dedicated professionals specializing in extraordinary situations.
To ensure prompt processing of your application, please answer the following questions:
Name (including aliases as appropriate):
Jia Lin (a.k.a. jiaXpora)
Age/Gender:
21/Female
Position Desired:
Technical Specialist
Relevant Skills:
Exceptional computer skills and experience, copywriting (4 years), dedication under pressure. Experience with navigating the web, software programming, research, information acquisitions.
Relevant Background Information:
I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated when I was a kid. There was an accident. I have a trust fund set up by the corporation, but I don't use it much. Um... What else do you need to know? The eye(?) said I should look at you. (Sorry, can I say that?)
Contact Information:
Jia Lin
XXXX-XB Street St.
New York, NY XXXXX
((Middle of Chinatown, Manhattan; fun fact: Jia Lin's post box has been broken for years, and Mrs. Chang collects her mail in her own post box; this information may be made available to any upper-ranking Illuminati officer, such as a corporation CEO or designated officer.))
Cell Phone: XXX.XXX.XXXX
((More fun facts: a trace on that number returns no viable information on Jia Lin besides harmless information; as if a paper trail had somehow been misplaced; this information annoys her Illuminati watchers to no end, even as it makes them even more sure she needs to be roped in.))
Email: jia.lin@rightwordscopywrite.biz
((OOC note: this email does not exist IRL, please don't email it ))
Next-of-Kin (optional):
None. Emergency contact: Mrs. Chang, next door, XXX.XXX.XXXX.

1. How much experience do you have with roleplaying? Have you played other MMORPGs? There's no wrong answer here.
I've played many, many MMOs, from Ultima Online all the way through to The Secret World. I'm an avid roleplayer, both in table top and LARPs, and have played so many games, I can't even remember them all. I need a gaming IV drip. I play both serious and non-serious games, from a Changeling: the Lost LARP every Friday night to a hilarious homebrew tabletop game every Sunday evening. I play less these days, now that I'm an Adult With a Real Job(tm), but I love playing whenever I can.
2. What has brought your character to the group? Do you have any stories/ideas that you hope to develop for them as they progress through the game, and if so, what are they?
Jia begins life as a computer geek of the highest order. She's neither suave nor polished, with hipster hair and librarian glasses and a penchant for hoodies and Converses. She's not particularly skilled in fighting, although she's been at least given shooting lessons for protection. If you put a sword in her hands, she'll probably take herself down at the knees. What she is, though, is an incredibly accomplished hacker; online, she can be skilled, confidant, unstoppable. She's no braggart, and anyone would be hard-pressed to find the username "jiaXpora" on any actual hacking job (although the username appears to be "not valid" on every major social media app out there). She doesn't do it for fame; she does it because she can. This makes her discreet, skilled, and rather useful.
The short version is this: when she was three years old, she very nearly ended up lunch for Something Very Bad(tm) that happened in Hong Kong. (Details aren't terribly important, news reported an outbreak of illness.) She was one of a handful of people who survived, people who were then gathered up by the Illuminati and redistributed to America. Because they had a close call, they kept an eye (eh heh) on all of them, just in case. Jia has never remembered the details, but she was definitely more sensitive to the secret world, even if she didn't know just how or what. To that end, as she developed her online persona and honed her formidable skills over the years, she unwittingly turned herself into an excellent tool for the Illuminati.
When they recognized the anima-shaping abilities she had potential for, they introduced her—in small doses—to the secret world at large. She's Illuminati, a skilled specialist, but she's no top agent. Not even close; she barely qualifies as more than "a contact" right now, and Mrs. Chang (a dowdy matron-like figure and a respectable magus in her own right) is her covert babysitter.
AEgir Communications is an excellent way for Jia to be introduced to "real life experience", to be given the opportunity to grow, and to be tested. Jia's strength isn't in her lack of morality. She has no problems doing the job that's in front of her, but too many details tend to stir up pesky morality questions, such as, "But what about the innocent victims?" She's used to being alone—she lives in a modest one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan's Chinatown and works as a copywriter from home—so putting her into a real world corporation with secret world ties is excellent training, as well as making sure she flourishes into a good tool.
I look forward to letting Jia grow, watching her cope with the kind of "field work" that a secret world tech specialist may be forced into, and on an OOC level, joining a crew of fine people.
3a. Fill in the blank: If my character were to meet an Eldritch Horror From Beyond Space And Time, he/she would probably __________.
...Run like hell, and send out a call with information to the People Who Need to Know(tm). Possibly, go insane. Eldritch Horrors from Beyond Space and Time tend to have that effect.
3b. Fill in the blank: If I were to meet an Eldritch Horror From Beyond Space And Time, I would probably __________.
...get eaten. It's a running joke in my house that my survivability rate tends to hover around the low percentages when it comes to zombie apocalypses and such. I have no sense of direction, and often will make a wrong turn with all the gusto of a right one. My husband often jokes that he just has to run faster than me (but I've started running as exercise, so the joke's on him!). Or, I'll go insane. Eldritch Horrors from Beyond Space and Time tend to have that effect.
4. How did you find out about us, and how would you like for us to contact you in-game?
I first heard the name from Hexomaph when he joined, and then stumbled into it when someone whose first name is Sarah (in a red jacket, if I recall correctly) wandered by. So I looked it up!
I'm easy with in-game tells if I'm on, or with forum messages here. I'm still learning The Secret World interface, so if there's an in-game messaging system, I actually haven't found it yet. (Don't judge me... >.>)
5. Have you ever wanted a chance to just say whatever you'd like to about yourself to a group of anonymous strangers over the internet? If so, here's your chance!
I believe in No Pants Days. On a more serious note, my hours tend to fluctuate somewhat. Sometimes, I'm on in the morning, others not 'til evening, and then some days, not 'til after midnight. (I'm US PST.) I'm self-employed, and deadlines sometimes get the best of me. That's partially why I made a shy geek with a penchant for turning reclusive when she's working on things (or forgetful), so if I go a while between seeing anyone, it'll still fit.
Thanks for allowing me the chance to apply and I look forward to answering any questions you may have. I'm in the middle of working on a TSW-RP wiki entry, too, if it helps. wiki.tsw-rp.com/index.php/Jia_%22jiaXpora%22_Lin (It's sparse right now, my apologies.)
Have a very lovely weekend!
