Online Employment Application:
Thank you for your interest in joining the team at AEgir Incorporated, a group of dedicated professionals specializing in extraordinary situations.
To ensure prompt processing of your application, please answer the following questions:
Name (including aliases as appropriate): Mathilda Anne Andriste
aka: Mat, Kaelana, Kae, Kae-Lae, Etaoin-Shrdlu
Age/Gender: 27/Female
Position Desired: Arcane Specialist, specializing in technomagick and warding.
Relevant Skills:
Work history: B.A. Journalism, Columbia University; Internship, IBM Data Security Group, 2006-2007; 5 years as Principal, Sylph Consulting, specializing in bespoke information security solutions.
Skill set: Social engineering; business development; magickal research, penetration, and defense. Experienced in the fine art of blood and other trangressive magicks before recruitment by Gaia and the Illuminati; style is best described as Thelemic with an emphasis on syncretic analysis and sympathetic magick (especially with regards to empowering physical actions and technological devices with magickal effects). Limited experience in elemental magick after recruitment. Adept at navigating social networks; in fact, prefers to negotiate on the basis of favors. Surprisingly talented cook with a weirdly thorough knowledge of 80s music.
Relevant Background Information:
Mat is the child of two successful expatriates from England, Ronald and Sibylla Andriste. Ronald was a successful trader in the foreign exchange markets, while his wife, Sibylla, was a technical writer specializing in economic analysis. The two originally met in Greece in the late 70s, and Sibylla decided to leave her home country to join Ronald in London. Ultimately, in 1987, Ronald took a job at a startup private equity firm in Manhattan and the two left England with their two children, then two year old Mat and her older sister, five year old Kary. Mat’s childhood wasn’t especially remarkable. Growing up in New York City with access to considerable – if not overwhelming – wealth, she and her sister received the best private education her parents could buy. While Kary proved to be especially talented in music, Mat preferred the company of books and computers. Mat was notably more introverted, but like her sister, she had a flair for the dramatic and a talent for deceit. Unlike her sister, however, Mat was rather more manipulative, with a preference for pulling the strings of those more popular than she.
Between her penchant for scheming and her intelligence, Mat was an exceptional student and got accepted to Columbia University. It was there in her senior year, though, that her life took a turn for the weird. While taking a cocktail of psychoactive substances with her boyfriend at the time to “expand their horizons,” certain incantations wormed their way into her mind in what she thought was the buzzing from a swarm of bees, and she scrawled them down in a fit of automatic writing. When she reviewed the pages later, she found that the "spells" of her past dabblings in magic were but a dim candle flame to the powers to which she now had access. Of course, such explorations into magic (and an infusion of Anima, courtesy of Gaia's winged servants) tripped old alarm wards, and an agent of the Illuminati soon paid her a visit. Intrigued by the offer of power and their unique initiation puzzle, Mat soon signed up with the Order. The Illuminati's connections got her access to the underground magick scene in New York, and she's been exploring new approaches to spellcasting ever since. Her particular interest is in applying Thelemic principles to syntheses of old magickal traditions and modern technology -- one of her most recent developments is using enchantments on a rifle to evoke effects on distant, spilled blood.
In her time at Sylph Consulting, she's primarily acted as a provider of magickal information security solutions; while she's not an especially talented programmer, she is particularly talented in blending technology with magick, and so she's provided various forms of wards, magickal sensors, and even black ICE to the Illuminati and their trusted associates. She's even sold her services outside of the Illuminati, always with an eye towards acquiring favors to improve her standing. It's a lonely life, though, and with the grip of darkness tightening around the world, Kaelana's seeking real friends and allies -- not just those who owe her favors.
Contact Information:
A professional e-mail address (etaoin.shrdlu@sylphconsulting.net), various private e-mail addresses, and several phone numbers tied to a phone, connected to a jar of her own enchanted blood, that lets her communicate without access to a nearby cell network through the principle of arcane connection.
Next-of-Kin (optional): Older sister (Kary), estranged; two living parents (Ronald and Sibylla), retired in Florida.

Thanks for applying! We're a group of roleplayers who find MMORPGs more fun to play when the roles of our characters are more fully developed than a list of numbers to define their survivability and damage. Members of the group will be expected to play and converse in-character (IC) for group activities, using notation such as (( )) around text intended to be out-of-character (OOC) so that it's clearly recognizable. We're seeking players who are mature, low-drama, and interested in character development as well as game progression!
Please take a minute to look over our Rules And Tone page--there's not a lot of rules, but if you're part of the group, you'll be expected to follow the few rules that we've got while you're representing us with the group's handle.
To help us get a feel for who you are and what you'd like to get out of being part of the group, please answer the following questions:
1. How much experience do you have with roleplaying? Have you played other MMORPGs? There's no wrong answer here.
I've been RPing for the last 21 years, starting with tabletop RPGs (which I still do weekly) and moving into World of Darkness MUSHes around 1997. After that, I broke into the RP community on EQ1's Firiona Vie server as the increasingly insane bard, Elluden Hakaisya. When City of Heroes came out, I moved there and started the heavy RP supergroup, New Porter Institute for Psychical Research, which ran for several years and ultimately was one of the longest lived and active heavy RP SGs on Virtue. I led the group for the better part of 5 years.
2. What has brought your character to the group? Do you have any stories/ideas that you hope to develop for them as they progress through the game, and if so, what are they?
My previous cabal (Wolf's Bane Organization) imploded due to inactivity of the leadership, so I've been on the lookout for an organization that'd fit my character. It seems that AEgir is probably a closer fit than my previous cabal, considering the shared interests (brokering deals, collecting favors, doing field work).
In the long term, I'd like to explore various elements of Kaelana's personality, such as the way she compartmentalizes and the hubris that comes with magickal power. Also, being able to put a spotlight on her estranged sister (who may work for someone like Orochi -- who knows?) and on more mundane aspects of her life should prove interesting.
3a. Fill in the blank: If my character were to meet an Eldritch Horror From Beyond Space And Time, he/she would probably __________.
...check to see if it's willing to negotiate. Maybe it just wants a nice haunt by the lake shore and a few worshippers? You never know when a favor or three from an Eldritch Horror From Beyond Space and Time might come in handy.
Failing that, rip its corrupted blood from its body, draw quinta essentia from the act, imbue herself with that strength, then slice it to ribbons. The best defense is, after all, a good offense.
3b. Fill in the blank: If I were to meet an Eldritch Horror From Beyond Space And Time, I would probably __________.
...disbelieve illusion? Wonder who slipped me LSD earlier?
4. How did you find out about us, and how would you like for us to contact you in-game?
I found your thread on the tsw-rp.com forums. In game contact can come via any method; the character's nickname is Kaelana.
5. Have you ever wanted a chance to just say whatever you'd like to about yourself to a group of anonymous strangers over the internet? If so, here's your chance!
I thought blogging was that chance.
Seriously, though, I like to think that I bring a combination of solid RP and good organizational skills to a group. I don't like drama, I've got a lot of RP experience, and I love mission RP.
